‘BETWEEN THE POSTS’ MAY 2013

Welcome to Mumbles Rugby Club monthly newsletter ‘Between the Posts’.

There is news of what is going on in and around the club and of course I would welcome any contributions from you, the members and supporters of the club!

ON THE PITCH
We did it! Where else could I start but with the news that the 1st XV have been crowned Champions of SWALEC Div 3 South West after a quite amazing run of matches! If I take you back to the middle of April when it transpired that Mumbles needed to win their 6 remaining matches + scoring at least 4 tries in each of those 6 matches to pip Trebanos for the title. It was one match at a time but it meant playing Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Wednesday for a few weeks to get the games played by the middle of May. We had to play Pencoed who were third, both home and away and our final game was away to Ystalyfera, who were also going for promotion! Mission impossible was how our task was described by many but as each victory was claimed the tension became apparent! So two busses and a stream of cars made their way up the Swansea Valley to Ystalyfera seeking a seventh consecutive bonus point win to secure the title. Two tries up at the break gave us a chance. A third try was claimed but suddenly the tension set in as the boys realised they were almost there. With minutes to go try number 4 was scored the title belonged to Mumbles. Just to make sure a 5th try was scored and the celebrations could begin. Coaches Simon Evans and Keith Colclough were interviewed on Scrum V as were club captain Paul Gooding and captain on the day Andrew Littlehales. A quick pint and it was back to the Mumbles Clubhouse for a night of well-deserved celebrations! I understand that went on until 1.30 a.m. and some are still there!
The good news doesn’t stop there, the Youth have secured second place in their division, which is a tremendous performance. At this point I must also mention the Development XV who have also had a tremendous season in the Swansea & District League.
The success keeps coming with two of our highly promising Junior Teams U11’s and U12’s both winning the Plate Competition in the Lucton Junior Rugby Tournament.
So a hugely successful season for all sections of the club! An interesting comment was said to me by an official of Ystalyfera. He had told his players’ Mumbles are what we should aspire to, a well run club who play a brand of rugby that is the envy of many, many teams’ Kind words indeed but very true words and something to live up to and take on again next season.
SOCIAL EVENTS
I mentioned last month that Chris Founds from the Junior Section had organised a special dinner to support the LATCH charity, who in turn are supporting Dylan Gunner who plays for Mumbles U14’s and has been diagnosed with cancer. I’m delighted to report the evening was a huge success and raised almost £4,000 for a very worthy cause. Congratulations Chris on a superbly organised evening.
PRESENTATION EVENING
We are holding the Presentation Evening on Friday 24th May in the clubhouse starting 7.30 p.m.ish but the bar will be open from 6.00 p.m.! After the dramatic events described above this is sure to be a great evening so I do hope you will be able to attend and join in the celebrations. Everyone is welcome including wives, girlfriends and all supporters! There will be a buffet and entry is free
125 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
A reminder we are celebrating our 125th Year Anniversary this year and events have been organised to recognise and celebrate this great achievement.
We held a very successful 125 Year Anniversary Golf Day at Langland Bay Golf Club last Friday. Our resident cycling Linesman Paul Hill and his team won the main prize, a trophy and a new Golf Bag each! Runners Up were the Dawson Team and 3rd were the Alan Sutherland Team. As always, an excellent meal and some good banter in the evening, you could tell Doug Baker was in with record red wine sales!
The next event is the Grand Dinner Dance on Saturday 1st June, with Phil Steel of Scrum V fame the guest speaker. I’m delighted to say this event has sold out (320) and with the success of the teams to celebrate I have a feeling we are in for a good night!

UNDERHILL PROJECT
Further meetings have been held with Swansea City Council and Mumbles Community Council have received a final report on the work required to be done to try and halt the problems of the pitch flooding which we have incurred all too often this season. I believe we are really making progress with this project, a formal bid for Lottery funding has been submitted and I am hopeful both the pitch area and the proposed new building will soon become a real possibility not just a dream!.

PLEA FOR HELP
As you probably know Kate Hopkins runs the club website which I’m pleased to say gets many hits (I think that is the jargon) Now Kate is due to get married later this year and reluctantly will have to give up the post of Web – Master (more jargon). So are there any computer loving folk out there who could take on the task of managing the club website? Please contact me if you think you can help 01792 360080.

100 CLUB
We had a great response to the new revamped scheme and held the first draw at the management meeting on 13th May. The winner of the £50 monthly prize was Chris Thomas. Many congratulations to Chris £50 richer for just a £5 monthly stake and of course a chance to win next month or the £500 prize in the August draw! It’s not too late to join the scheme; there will be a monthly cash prize of £50 and then every quarter there will be a super prize of £500!  Subscription is just £5 per month and payment is by direct debit so there is no need to worry about remembering to pay every month and of course you will be automatically entered in the monthly draw. The monthly draw will be made on the first Monday of each month under the scrutiny of the management committee. Results will be e.mailed and posted on the noticeboard each month. Those of you already in the scheme have been allocated two shares in this revised format.  Just to confirm Justin Price will be managing the ‘100 Club’ to ensure the funds generated will be put to good causes  and 100% ploughed back into the club. Identifying the need for new equipment and new kit required by any of the teams are some examples of how Justin will manage the funds. So don’t delay complete the membership form attached or send a cheque for £60 to Gareth Bennett, c/o the clubhouse, if you are not in it, you can’t win it!
LIONS 2013
As you are aware the British & Irish Lions are in Australia this year playing 3 tests on consecutive Saturdays starting on 22nd June Brisbane, then 29th June Melbourne and finishing on 6th July in Sydney. We are planning to have a Lions Breakfast Club in the clubhouse on each of these Saturdays. What could be better than a Bacon Roll and a Pint watching the Lions .v. the Aussies. Check the noticeboard for timings but I think coverage will probably start about 10.30 a.m. There are of course other games as the Tour starts on Saturday June 1st and we will be showing all the games Live in the club. Again check the posters displayed in the club for details.

Well that’s about it for this month. As I said earlier it has been a fantastic season both on and off the pitch and how fitting the success is in our 125th Year. I hope to see you at the events that are coming up it would be great to see you and I know the players will appreciate your continued support. Of course feel free to pop in for a pint or two in the clubhouse, you will be most welcome. It would be great to hear from you on any matter, good or bad; my e.mail address is indicated below.

Predators try out new Under 10 rules !!

Tonight the predators try out the under 10's new rules for next season (for our first time we all did a great job).

Even though the local season has now finished we will continue to train on Wednesday up to the tour weekend when we will play our friends Narbeth.

We now need to practise the new rules during training and set the scene for next season. The main challenge is to start playing as a team and not as individuals. Players please note that Tony, Dave, Chris or I do not make the rules, they are set and reviewed each year by the Welsh Rugby Union.

I understand that you all have lots of passion and energy and we will try and tap into that over the next season, but we need to understand that a try is a try for the team and one player cannot win against an opposition of 10 will the same amount of energy as we have.

We still want to make the sessions as fun as possible, however it is essential for player safety that we are "rugby ready" at all times during games and training. i.e respectful of coaches, other players , parents and opposition teams, wearing the correct kit ( body armour, gum shields, scrum caps are all recommended )learn and listen as much as possible and most importantly keep safe by using the skills we passed on during the mini rugby years. Looking forward to tour Jon

Lucton Trip for predators is Cancelled !!

We will try and have an extra specail tour in the next few weeks.

We are training as normal this wednesday 6.30pm at underhill and we will be practising some new rules for next season including RUCKING !

Club News !!

MUMBLES RUGBY CLUB

   ‘BETWEEN THE POSTS’
MARCH 2013

Welcome to the first edition of Mumbles Rugby Club monthly newsletter ‘Between the Posts’.
I hope to bring you news of what is going on in and around the club and of course would welcome any contributions from you, the members and supporters of the club!

ON THE PITCH
So far the season is going very well for all sections of the club. The 1st XV with Simon Evans and Keith Colclough at the helm, are currently second in Division 3 South West of the National SWALEC League and with 8 games still to play, have everything to play for with a view of, dare I say, promotion at the end of the season. They are also in the semi-final of the West Wales Rugby Union Bowl and play Newcastle Emlyn on Thursday 7th March at the Carmarthen Athletic ground so come along and support the boys! K.o. is 7.00 p.m. Bus leaving the clubhouse 5.00 p.m.
The Development XV continue to make good progress under the coaching skills of John Evans and are second in the Premiership of the Swansea & District League as well as also being in the semi-final of the League Cup! Mention must be made of Zag who keeps it all going.  The success continues with the Youth XV having an excellent season under the expert coaching of Steve Elsworthy ‘Monty’ and Andy Hughes
Finally in this section we come to the Juniors and again it’s nice to be able to report more success for most of the age groups. The U15’s are making progress in the cup as are the U14’s and U9’s. The Juniors are the future of the club and it is very important that we support the boys in any way we can.
It is hoped to publish a list of results for March for all teams in the next edition.
Why not come down to Underhill Park on a Saturday or Sunday and support the boys as they go into the final push for success this season. Go to the club website to view the remaining fixtures for all of the teams both Senior and Junior.
125 YEAR ANNIVERSARY and SOCIAL EVENTS
As you are aware we are celebrating our 125th Year Anniversary this year and events have been organised to recognise and celebrate this great achievement.
Friday 17th May is the date for our 125 Year Anniversary Golf Day which is being held at Langland Bay Golf Club. After the golf, there will be a Dinner in the evening with the presentation of prizes and a trophy for the winning team! There are 24 tee-times available and I’m pleased to say we have already received 12 entries and I expect to have a full entry list very soon. If you are interested in putting a team in for this event please contact me as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
The next event is the Grand Dinner Dance on Saturday 1st June, with Phil Steel of Scrum V fame the guest speaker. Tickets priced at £30 each are going very well and it looks like it could be a sell out in Swansea University. If you haven’t already booked your place please contact me as soon as you can.
Can I draw your attention to what is sure to be a great evening! Friday 15th March is the night of a Q & A session with Welsh Internationals Robert Sidoli and Rhys Thomas. This event is part of a testimonial year for Steve Jones of Newport Gwent Dragons and brother of our very own Mark Jones (Skinny) the club steward. There will be a quiz and a buffet and it should be a good build up to the Wales .v. England game the following day. Please see Skinny to book your ticket, priced at just £5!
I would also like to invite you to join me at the clubhouse for a drink and some lively banter. We show all the major rugby matches including the Ospreys and Six Nations, as well as all the ‘Swans’ games. I can say from first-hand experience, you will not get a better pint in Mumbles and probably the cheapest, so why not call in!

UNDERHILL PROJECT
Moving to other matters off the pitch, officers of the club have been working very hard on the Underhill Project. This is a scheme to re-develop the Park and facilities, once we have agreed a long term lease with Swansea City Council. The project is in partnership with Mumbles Rangers Football Club and the first step was to form a new company, Mumbles Sports and Community Club Ltd. The decision to form the company was taken so that we can make bids for grants to fund the project which is expected to cost in the region of £1.5 million. As you can see this is a very ambitious project but we are confident we will get the backing of the local community to bring this much needed facility to Mumbles and the surrounding area. Officers of both clubs have been working hard just to get to this stage and of course there are certain procedures you have to go through when dealing with Swansea Council and Mumbles Community Council. This is a project we are determined to complete sooner rather than later. While reaching this stage has taken some time, I am confident that the process will now move a bit quicker! Again I will look to keep you up-to-date with progress through this newsletter.

100 CLUB
For the last year amongst other fund raising schemes, we have run the ‘100 Club’. The decision has now been taken to revamp this event and details will be coming out shortly, when it is hoped to attract a new legion of members with regular draws and improved prizes, so watch this space.

SENIOR TOUR
This year the Senior Tour will be over the weekend of 9th – 12th August when we travel to Budapest. To book your place, please add your name to the list displayed in the Members Lounge and pay £100 deposit by 9th March 2013. Numbers are restricted but I think there are a few places left, so get your name on the list!

OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB
I thought it would be useful to remind you of the officers and committee members of the club who I can assure you, are working tirelessly to ensure this great club continues for at least another 125 Years!
President – Alan Williams, Chairman – Martin Rodwell, Secretary – Clive Davies
Treasurer – Peter Bray

Committee Members: Club Officers, Simon Evans, Howard Wade, Peter Hixson, Norman Hopkins, Paul Hill, Robin Bonham, Barney Bowers, Gareth Bennett, Huw Evans, Paul Gooding, Matt Reeves
Stewards – Mark and Julie Jones

Please feel free to approach any officers of the club if you wish to discuss any matter about the club or indeed if you feel you have something to offer in terms of the club progressing onwards and upwards.

HELP REQUIRED
One admin task which is outstanding, we are looking for someone to set up a database of club members, so that we can communicate in a much quicker and modern way. So if you have some spare time and can deal with Excel get in touch.

Well I hope you have found the introduction of this newsletter an interesting read and as I said at the beginning, if you would like to contribute or if there is something you would like to be featured on a regular basis, it would be great to hear from you.
Here is to a successful month for Mumbles Rugby Club both on and off the pitch!

Gondre Tour Booking Update

Note from the Vale to Parents!!

Dear Jon

2 weeks is fine but we will need to be strict about the 2 weeks as we don't usually take providional bookings - I've put the accommodations onto hold which means if anyone rings up it may seem like we have no availability so if possible please make sure they speak to me to make the booking and mention the Mumbles Rugby Tour - just to hopefully avoid any confusion.  Deposit is £100 per booking with the exception of touring/camping where it would be a question of paying the booking in full at time of booking.

Regards, Louise

Spring Summer Tours & Mumbles RFC 125th Anniversary

Just wanted to inform everyone on the fairly busy plan the Predators and families have towards the end of season with the spring summer arrangements. But before I do, on behalf of us coaches I would like to congratulate all the boys on how much they have embrased the rugby pathway learning this season and this was evident in our  recent performances. I'm sure you will all agree that this last weekends performance against Uplands was a tremendous result, especially as they have set the standard in recent times. Well done lads, coaches & support,  it was a real team predator effort.!!

Ok here goes:

Mumbles Predator Tour, Friday 3rd - Monday the 6th May - 3 nights.
Cowboys & Indians (With a twist!!), tour rules & itinary will be releaed closer to the time.

After a regional search we have decided to re visit Gondre park, i'm sure you will all agree we had a ball at Gondre last year and it offers the basic facilities that I believe we need for 21 families and also the best value for money. In the first instance we need to book in, so I have negotiated the following prices, please contact Louise at Gondre to reserve your accomodation, quote Mumbles RFC, booked by Jon Price ...
They may need a small deposit or payment over the phone. I believe you can also book through their web site, however you will not qualify for the group discounts.

I will probably take a tourer pitch this year, however I can recommend the Annex, we had it last year, it takes two families and could be very handy if it rains for a party or two, dvd for the team in the very large accomodation!! The prices below are for the three nights. Please note for all those that did not come last year, its a family trip so all are welcome. Louise has said that they will hold this accomodation for circa 7 days so please contact asap to avoid disapointment.
